Altar Boy Retreat Encourages Servers To Be Ready To Serve The Lord

Thursday, July 02, 2015

JOHNSTOWN, PA [Tribune-Democrat] - Sixty-seven altar boys from 13 states are in Johnstown this week for a retreat that mixes faith and fun. The three-day event brings together altar boys, who range in age from 8 to 18, and leaders of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese for education, prayer and fellowship. The retreat is being held at Christ the Saviour Cathedral on Garfield Street and this year focuses around the theme of “To Serve is to Love.” “I want you to not be just an altar boy, but be the best altar boy and be ready to service the Lord,” Bishop Gregory of Nyssa, bishop of the American Carpatho-Russian Diocese, said to the boys after celebrating Divine Liturgy with them on Tuesday. “Take the theme of this retreat and put it in your heart and love the Lord.” The retreat balances spiritual and fun activities and shows the boys that the priesthood is a viable and worthy vocation. Participants also have the opportunity to bond and learn how to be leaders. Bishop Gregory said the purpose of the retreat is to encourage the boys to pursue the priesthood. “Our priests are getting older and retiring, and we will need new priests, and if they aren’t coming from this group then where?” he said. A Message Signed in Blood

Saturday, June 27, 2015

I am not a fan of horror movies. I don’t enjoy feeling frightened by suspense and terror as a means of entertainment. But back in February I forced myself to watch a video that was about as horrifying as anything I have ever seen. It was so awful that I could not bear to watch it to the end. What made it especially horrifying was that it did not feature actors following a script but was a real-life documentary. The video was titled: “A Message Signed in Blood to the Nation of the Cross”. It was the gruesome video of 21 Orthodox Christians of Egypt beheaded by Islamic terrorists on a beach in Libya. The video was designed to send a message filled with fear and terror to the world, especially Christians “the Nation of the Cross”. The terrorists who murdered these men message did send a message to the world but the message was the opposite of what they intended. The video included a subtle message of triumph, victory, courage, and faith. The unintended message has encouraged and united Christians around the world. One of the captions their murderers wrote said “these insisted to remain in unbelief”. Do we understand what this simple sentence means? It means these Orthodox men were given the choice to deny their faith in Jesus and to recite the Muslim confession of faith. It means these men refused to deny Christ and embrace Islam. With a knife at their throats they were given the chance to be rewarded and be returned to their wives, children and families. Each of them refused! What faith! Read more...

STEWARDSHIP

On Stewardship and the Orthodox Life - Part 48: Do Not Be Afraid

Sunday, June 28, 2015

“…perfect love casts out fear.” (1 John 4:18 RSV) Many people are full of doubts. They are unsure of the future. They are unsure of their relationships. They are unsure even about God and salvation. This often puts such people into a position of fear. It is especially the fear of the future that so often takes away any joy in the present. When we fear for our children, our world, our health, our world – we fear things we perhaps ought to fear. But, more often than not we fear things that need not be feared. Take, for example, one of the greatest stewards in the Scriptures. St. Mark tells the story of Jesus watching people in the temple area. Some are placing large sums of money into the temple treasury. Jesus points out to His disciples the poor widow and her fearless action. She had deep trust and virtually no fear: she placed two copper coins into the treasury as her gift. Read more...
