Welcome To Christ The Saviour Seminary

Chapel

Christ the Saviour Seminary was founded in 1940 largely through the efforts and vision of Metropolitan Orestes P. Chornock, first bishop of the American Carpatho- Russian Orthodox Diocese. The school was originally opened in the St. Nicholas parish complex on Tenth Street in New York City. Later, classes were conducted for a brief time in Nicholson, PA. A major move took place in 1941 when ten seminarians resided and studied in Metropolitan Orestes' Mill Hill Avenue property in Bridgeport, CT. In 1951 the diocese acquired the Strayer Mansion, a landmark in the Morrellville section of Johnstown.

Christ the Saviour Seminary, has two missions. First, it exists for the education and training of Orthodox men for the priesthood of the Orthodox Church, stimulating them to grow intellectually, morally and spiritually, and inspiring them to love and serve God and the Orthodox Church .

Second, the seminary provides a theological and spiritual formation in an Orthodox academic atmosphere for men interested in growth in the Orthodox Christian tradition, whether or not the individual is working toward an ordained ministry in the Orthodox Church.

On July 1, 1960, the Seminary was approved by the Pennsylvania State Council of Education and chartered to grant a Bachelor of Theology degree.  (Read More...)

Sunday, June 28, 2015

JOHNSTOWN, PA [Diocesan Chancery] -- This evening more than 100 of our Diocesan youth arrived safely at Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Johnstown for the Annual Diocesan Altarboy Retreat, and at Sts Peter and Paul Church in Windber, PA for the Annual Young Women's Encounter. During the next three days, the altar boys and young women of our Diocese will have the opportunity in their own venue to spend time in prayer, learning, fellowship and service. Taking inspiration from the Scriptural verse, "Live as free men, yet without using your freedom as a pretext for evil; but live as servants of God." - 1 Peter 2:16, the theme of this year's altar boy retreat is “To Serve is to Love…” In addition to interactive discussions on the retreat theme, instruction in Plain Chant Singing, Read more...

Theological Reflections

My journey to Albania began during my second semester of seminary this past winter. O.C.M.C. had decided to award seminarians with a grant and stipend for missionary work through The Louis and Helen Nicozosis Mission Team Endowment.  The requirements were simple in that a seminarian had to write an essay concerning why he felt foreign missions were important and necessary in the Orthodox Church.
