Prayer Before Reading Holy Scripture
O Master Who loves mankind, illuminate our hearts with the pure light of Your divine knowledge and open the eyes of our mind to understand the teachings of Your Gospel. Instill in us also the fear of Your blessed commandments, that we may overcome all carnal desires, entering upon a spiritual life and understanding and acting in all things according to Your holy will. For You are the enlightenment of our souls and bodies, O Christ God, and to You we give glory together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, gracious and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.

For "The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because
of you," as it is written.
For circumcision is indeed profitable if you keep the law;

of the heart, in the Spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not
from men but from God.
Gospel Reading: Matthew 5:33-41
"Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, '

"But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven,
for it is God's throne;
"nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by
Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
"Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make
one hair white or black.
"But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For
whatever is more than these is from the evil one.
"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a
tooth for a tooth.'
"But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever
slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
"If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let
him have your cloak also.
"And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.
