Prayer Before Reading Holy Scripture
O Master Who loves mankind, illuminate our hearts with the pure light of Your divine knowledge and open the eyes of our mind to understand the teachings of Your Gospel. Instill in us also the fear of Your blessed commandments, that we may overcome all carnal desires, entering upon a spiritual life and understanding and acting in all things according to Your holy will. For You are the enlightenment of our souls and bodies, O Christ God, and to You we give glory together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, gracious and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.
Epistle Reading: Hebrews 11:8,11-16
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the
place which he would afterward receive as an inheritance. And he went out,
not knowing where he was going.
By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive
seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged
Him faithful who had promised.
Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born
as many as the stars of the sky in multitude; innumerable as the sand which
is by the seashore.
These all died in faith, not having received the promises,
but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them, and
confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
For those who say such things declare plainly that they
seek a homeland.
And truly if they had called to mind that country from
which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return.
But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country.
Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a
city for them.
Gospel Reading: Mark 9:33-41
Then He came to Capernaum. And when He was in the house He
asked them, "What was it you disputed among yourselves on the road?"
But they kept silent, for on the road they had disputed among
themselves who would be the greatest.
And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, "If
anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all."
Then He took a little child and set him in the midst of them.
And when He had taken him in His arms, He said to them,
"Whoever receives one of these little children in My name
receives Me; and whoever receives Me, receives not Me but Him who sent Me."
Now John answered Him, saying, "Teacher, we saw someone who
does not follow us casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him
because he does not follow us."
But Jesus said, "Do not forbid him, for no one who works a
miracle in My name can soon afterward speak evil of Me.
"For he who is not against us is on our side.
"For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name,
because you belong to Christ, assuredly, I say to you, he will by no means
lose his reward.
