Orthodox On-Line Scripture Study Resumes

JOHNSTOWN, PA -- The Diocesan Chancery is pleased to announce that the on-line Orthodox Scripture Study, on the Gospel of St. Matthew, has resumed its weekly classes for the Fall and Spring 2012-2013 academic year, continuing where the study left off at the end of the 2011-2012 season. It is held weekly on Saturday evenings at 4:45 pm and will continue through the end of June 2013, with short recesses to be announced during the Nativity and Holy Week/Paschal Seasons. Each class is approximately 60 minutes in length with time allotted for questions to follow.

JOHNSTOWN, PA -- The Diocesan Chancery has been informed that His Eminence, Archbishop Jan of Presov, Slovakia reposed in the Lord on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the age of 75. Archbishop Jan (John) Holoni was born on January 29th, 1937 in Trebišov, Slovakia. In 1958 His Eminence, completed the Orthodox Theological Faculty in Presov, and was ordained, that same year deacon and later priest.

JOHNSTOWN, PA [National ACRY] -- Deadlines are quickly approaching for the 68th Annual Senior and 29th Junior ACRY Convention which will be held in Johnstown, PA, from Friday, August 31st to Monday, September 3rd hosted by Chapter 20 and the Christ the Saviour Cathedral family. ACRY members and diocesan faithful are cordially invited to attend the convention. The deadline for hotel reservations at a discounted rate, program book adds and meal reservations is Tuesday August 7, 2012.

MERCER, PA --- Diocesan Campers from the Pittsburgh, Mid-Atlantic, Tri-State and Washington D.C. Deaneries Deaneries arrived this afternoon at Camp Nazareth for the third and final week of the 2012 Camping Program.These young men and women from across the diocese, join the more than 200 of the peers who have already participated in this year's program which has been described by campers, clergy and staff alike as the "best ever" This year's theme is The Church is the Door to Life.

DIOCESAN CHANCERY -- Protodeacon John Youhas returned home to the Lord and entered into eternal rest with his family at his side early Friday morning, July 20, 2012, after a year long battle with cancer. Born May 17, 1950, in Central City, PA, the son of John and Kathryn (Pribish) Youhas, he was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, Ambridge, PA. Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Andrew (Katren) Pribish, and Michael (Mary) Youhas; and many aunts and uncles. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Bonita (Ronald) Raible of Callawassie Island-Okatie, SC; niece, Tamara (Danny) Wilson of Boynton Beach, FL; along with several uncles, aunts and cousins.

DANBURY, CT -- The Orthodox Youth Mission team was in Johnson City, TN from July 7-15, 2012 to participate in the Appalachian Service Project. The team was lead by Father Luke Mihaly of Holy Trinity in Danbury, CT along with 4 other adult leaders. The team consisted of 11 teens from the parishes of Holy Trinity Danbury, CT, St. John's Mill Hill Avenue, Bridgeport, CT, Holy Trinity Yonkers, NY, St. Barbara's Orange, CT and St. Alexis in Clinton, CT. The first project was installing vinyl siding, reframing an outside wall, and creating a drainage ditch for an elderly woman who lives alone. The second project was installing a new outside wall, including framing, insulating, sheathing and siding for an elderly couple
